La comunidad universitaria de Ponce Health Sciences University (PSHU) reconoció la trayectoria y celebró el nombramiento de la Dra. Melissa Marzán, profesora del Programa de Salud Pública de la institución como nueva Principal Oficial de Epidemiología del Departamento de Salud de Puerto Rico. Marzán, quien es profesora del programa de Salud Pública de PHSU, también cuenta con más de 13 años de experiencia laboral, incluyendo un rol en respuesta epidemiológica del país en VIH.
“Nos llena de gran orgullo este nombramiento. Las recomendaciones y aportaciones en salud pública de la doctora Marzán han sido claves para el país desde el inicio de la pandemia. Han sido meses largos los que Marzán ha dedicado aportando en la búsqueda de soluciones para erradicar el COVID-19 en la isla. Sabemos que Puerto Rico cuenta con una excelente epidemióloga y confiamos en que su experiencia y conocimientos ayudarán a combatir la pandemia del COVID-19”, expresó el presidente y CEO de Ponce Health Sciences University, el Dr. David Lenihan. “Celebramos su nombramiento y estamos seguros de que sus capacidades, integridad, empatía y compromiso con Puerto Rico aportarán a la respuesta epidemiológica del país de manera favorable. Ella sabe que cuenta con todo nuestro apoyo y le auguramos el mejor de los éxitos”, dijo por su parte la Dra. Kenira Thompson, presidenta del Ponce Research Institute y vicepresidenta de investigación de PHSU.Marzán, quien ha liderado importantes investigaciones en salud pública en Puerto Rico, fue, además, parte del equipo de epidemiólogos que estableció la primera plataforma en línea de monitoreo sindrómico con el fin de obtener datos que permitieran conocer los posibles brotes de COVID-19 y evaluar cómo se comporta el virus en la isla. Este modelo fue reconocido e implantando en la Universidad de Harvard.

PHSU Recognized the trajectory and celebrate the selection of Dr. Melissa Marzan as the new Chief Epidemiology Officer of the Department of Health
The university community of Ponce Health Sciences University (PSHU) recognized the trajectory of Dr. Melissa Marzan, professor of the Public Health Program of the institution. It celebrated her new position as the new Chief Epidemiology Officer of the Department of Health of Puerto Rico. Marzan has more than 13 years of work experience, including a role in the country’s epidemiological response to HIV.“We are very proud of this selection. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Dr. Marzan’s public health recommendations and contributions have been vital for the country. In addition, Marzan has spent many months contributing to the search for solutions to eradicate COVID-19 on the island. We know that Puerto Rico has an excellent epidemiologist, and we are confident that her experience and knowledge will help fight the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Dr. David Lenihan, President, and CEO of Ponce Health Sciences University. “We celebrate her selection and are confident that her skills, integrity, empathy, and commitment to Puerto Rico will contribute to the country’s epidemiological response in a favorable manner. She knows she has our full support, and we wish her the best of success,” said Dr. Kenira Thompson, President of the Ponce Research Institute and Vice President of research at PHSU.Marzan, who has led necessary public health research in Puerto Rico, was also part of the team of epidemiologists who established the first online platform for syndromic monitoring to obtain data that would allow us to know the possible outbreaks of COVID-19 and evaluate how the virus behaves on the island. This model was recognized and implemented at Harvard University.
