A través de la creación del programa G-RISE de Ponce Health Sciences University, se otorgarán fondos de $3.2 millones de dólares por cinco años con el objetivo de aumentar la competitividad de hispanoamericanos que realizan investigación biomédica y fomentar el crecimiento de la investigación en Puerto Rico.
En específico, el programa G-RISE persigue proveer adiestramientos en destrezas técnicas de investigación, así como en áreas profesionales, operacionales y de comunicación. Además, incluye oportunidades de colaboración y trabajo en equipo para desarrollar una red profesional de colegas. De igual forma, tiene como objetivo aumentar la tasa de estudiantes que completan su PhD.
El programa G-RISE está disponible para todos los estudiantes del programa doctoral en Ciencias Biomédicas que cualifiquen, tanto los de nuevo ingreso como los que llevan más tiempo en la institución. Hasta la fecha, bajo el primer Programa RISE (R25GM082406) que operó por 14 años en PHSU, 59 participantes se han beneficiado y 33 ya han obtenido su grado de PhD. El objetivo del nuevo programa G-RISE (T32GM144896) es continuar aumentando la competitividad y el éxito de los estudiantes, que les permitan una transición exitosa a carreras en la fuerza laboral de investigación biomédica.
“El programa G-RISE trabaja en conjunto con el PHSU Moffitt Cancer Center Partnership y el programa RCMI para impactar significativamente la experiencia de aprendizaje del estudiante en materia de investigación e impulsar nuevas iniciativas. Además de beneficiar a los estudiantes seleccionados para este programa, la comunidad en general se beneficia del programa G-RISE debido al impacto de las investigaciones que realizan los estudiantes,” explicó Caroline Appleyard, PhD., FAPS, directora del programa G-RISE de PHSU.

$3.2 M Grant Available for Biomedical Sciences Training Program
Through the creation of Ponce Health Sciences University’s G-RISE program, $3.2 million dollars will be granted during five years with the goal of increasing the competitiveness of Hispanic Americans who carry out biomedical research and fostering the growth of research in Puerto Rico.
Specifically, the G-RISE program seeks to provide training in technical research skills, as well as in professional, operational and communication areas. In addition, it includes collaboration and teamwork opportunities to develop a professional network of colleagues. Similarly, it aims to increase the rate of students who complete their PhD.
The G-RISE program is available to eligible doctoral students in the Biomedical Sciences program, both new students and those who have been in the institution longer. To date, 59 participants have benefited under the first RISE Program (R25GM082406) that operated for 14 years at PHSU, and 33 of them have already obtained their PhD degrees. The goal of the new G-RISE program (T32GM144896) is to continue to increase the competitiveness and success of students, allowing them to successfully transition into careers in biomedical research.
“The G-RISE program works in conjunction with the PHSU Moffitt Cancer Center Partnership and the RCMI program to significantly impact the student learning experience in research, and to drive new initiatives. In addition to benefiting the students selected for this program, the community at large benefits from the G-RISE program due to the impact of student research”, explained Caroline Appleyard, Ph.D., FAPS, director of the G-RISE program at PHSU.
