Graduate Medical Education
The PHSU Graduate Medical Education Office (PHSU-GME) serves as the institutional liaison between Ponce Health Sciences University School of Medicine and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The GME Office works closely with the GME Committee, program directors, faculty, program coordinators, residents, and fellows to ensure a high-quality learning environment that meets all ACGME requirements for maintenance of accreditation.
Aling with the PHSU mission of providing excellent medical education to individuals with diverse background, the PHSU-GME office is dedicated to provide institutional oversight and support to residents, fellows, faculty and graduate programs. The GME office is part of the School of Medicine.
Mission
The mission of the GME office is to oversee and administer the PHSU SOM sponsored programs, and to assure compliance with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements.

The vision of the GME Office is to promote an optimal and quality leaning environment while improving the overall healthcare services for the community.
Residency Programs
Psychiatry:
Our residency is a co-joint venture between the Veterans Affairs Caribbean Healthcare System (VACHS) facilities and the Ponce Health Sciences affiliated hospitals and clinics. Our main site for the first 2 years of training is the VACHS.
The third and fourth year of training take place in the PHSU Wellness Center. Our clinic serves diverse populations representing our community in a multidisciplinary environment thus providing a rich array of clinical experience.
- PGY-I is available at the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).
- In the case of upper-level positions available, the Application for PGY-II Positions will be offered at ERAS.
- Fellowships applications are available through ERAS.
- For other levels (III and IV positions) please contact us.
The selection is done through the MATCH Program.
- Salaries in the competitive range among residencies in Puerto Rico and USA.
- 4 weeks for vacations and 15 days for sick leave (by year).
- Residents in good standing are encouraged to participate in educational activities (national meetings, APA events).

The PHSU Psychiatry Residency is an ACGME accredited residency that offers a general psychiatry educational program that prepares residents for the broad practice of contemporary psychiatry. Our framework builds on the understanding that a person is a composite of mind, brain, body and environment.
